February 7, 2015: Many children and adults with special needs do not have the same opportunities as people without disabilities. Many a time they find it hard to be able to participate in recreational services, sports or summer camps. However, the Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association (NSSRA) has made it their goal to provide recreational services to enrich the lives of community members with all types of mental and physical disabilities through these activities. October 1, 2014: It had been a typical morning in our house — kids waking up way too early to raid the freezer for frozen chocolate chip waffles instead of cereal or fruit. I overhear their voices giggling and making silly jokes to one another while playing "Minecraft" on their iPads. They are adversaries one moment and each other's greatest champions the next. Continue…

The organization, which provides recreation opportunities for people with disabilities in 10 park districts and three municipalities on the North Shore, announced last summer that it was looking for new digs. The current NSSRA facility in Northbrook is too small and unsafe to access, said Craig Culp, executive director for the special recreation association. Continue…
August 29, 2014: It took about twenty seconds to make Mitch Slotnick feel all of his 73 years. That’s about how long it took the Northbrook Park District Board Aug. 18 to vote down a $50 million referendum on the Nov. 4 ballot to buy and convert the Five Seasons Sports Club into a recreation center. Continue…
August 15, 2014: About 400 people gathered to support the Northbrook-based North Suburban Special Recreation Association at its fifth annual NSSRA Summer Bash on Aug. 13. The celebration took place at the verdant Techny Prairie Park and Fields in Northbrook and recognized individuals with disabilities. Continue…

June 19, 2014: The Northbrook Park District may share space with the Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association if voters approve the idea for converting a local Five Seasons Sports Club into a community recreation center, officials say. Park district officials say they still are gathering input from the community on the plan to pay about $20.3 million for the 115,000-square-foot facility at 1300 Techny Road and the 17 acres of land on which it sits.
