Recreational Therapy Month Staff Spotlight – Sierra Shum

Meet Sierra Shum.
As therapeutic recreation month nears the end, we have a few more staff to recognize for their outstanding work. Today we want to give you a glimpse into the life of Sierra Shum, a recreation manager at NSSRA.
Sierra was introduced to the special recreation field at an early age because of a sibling’s disability; Sierra saw first-hand the importance of providing socialization and recreation options to the disability community. She quickly got involved in the field, which started as a camp counselor with a Special Recreation Agency in High School. Sierra continued her commitment to the area when she began working for NSSRA as a recreation specialist. As a recreation specialist, she brought her passion for painting (which she has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in) to participants to help them excel in their work. When we asked Sierra about her favorite memory at NSSRA, she recalled leading NSSRA’s singing and art programs and watching the participants express themselves! “The connection, confidence, and excitement that occurs through cultural arts programming are wonderful to be a part of,” said Sierra. She also reflected on her trips to Maine and Colorado and the participants’ adventure, laughter, and new experiences.
Sierra’s fondness for the arts extends outside of work, where you can find her involved in a Chicago choir. She also loves enjoying the Chicago Summers while enjoying the many events while spending time with friends & family.
Thank you, Sierra, for bringing your joy of the arts to therapeutic recreation, and thank you for the joy you bring to all participants.
