New NSSRA Adult Day Program Finds A Home
Northbrook – February 19, 2015 – Leisure In Full Effect (LIFE), a new adult day program for northern suburban residents with disabilities, is coming to Glencoe.
This week both Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association (NSSRA) Board of Directors and Glencoe Park District Board of Commissioners approved an Interagency Cooperation Agreement effectively making Glencoe’s Takiff Center the new home for NSSRA’s LIFE program. The agreement, passed by Glencoe on Tuesday, February 17 and NSSRA on Thursday, February 19, allows Glencoe Park District to license space for the program to NSSRA.
LIFE is an expansion of NSSRA’s current adult day programming for residents with disabilities. Enriched Lifestyles for Adults (ELA) has already been running for a decade with participant demand growing steadily in recent years, compelling NSSRA staff to conduct a survey and focus group in 2014 determining the need for additional programming. LIFE gives families in the northern suburbs of Chicago a second day program option, and Takiff Center is a natural choice for the program given its central location in NSSRA’s partner communities and vast recreation amenities.
LIFE is focused on leisure opportunities, life skills and independence and is specifically for adults, ages 22 and older or high school graduates. Focused on independent living skills, socialization, recreation and leisure and community integration, LIFE will be held Monday – Friday from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, 48 weeks per year, with two, three and five day options for participants. The registration deadline for LIFE is Monday, March 2, 2015 with an anticipated start day of Monday, August 10, 2015. For more information about LIFE, visit www.nssra.org/life.
As one of NSSRA’s founding communities, Glencoe Park District has maintained a strong partnership with NSSRA over the last 45 years. Glencoe residents have participated in nearly 1,500 NSSRA programs and events since 2010.
