Enriched Lifestyles for Adults (ELA) Fun Run Brings Together Special Recreation Associations in Celebration

Highland Park, May 22, 2023 – The Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association (NSSRA) and Enriched Lifestyles for Adults (ELA) Program, a year-round day program for individuals with developmental disabilities aged 22 and older, hosted its highly anticipated Fun Run on Friday, May 19. The event brought together participants from ELA and several other special recreation associations, creating a vibrant and inclusive community celebration.

ELA participants and their friends from Western DuPage Special Recreation Association (WDSRA), Northern Illinois Special Recreation Association (NISRA), South East Association for Special Parks and Recreation (SEASPAR), Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County (SRACLC), and Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association (NEDSRA) showcased their unwavering determination and athletic abilities throughout the event. Under the clear skies at Maplewood Park in Deerfield, ELA participants and SRA friends grew to over 150 runners, walkers, and volunteers as the race commenced. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as participants engaged in various activities and attractions, including engaging 90s Trivia, capturing memorable moments at the Photo Booth, the thrilling game of Ker-plunk, and an exhilarating water relay. These additional events added to the vibrant and festive ambiance, creating an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

“This year’s ELA walk was truly fantastic. Witnessing SRAs from near and far coming together to celebrate and have a remarkable experience,” expressed Joe Hart, Recreation Specialist for Adult Day Programs.

ELA participants dedicated several weeks to planning and organizing the Fun Run, ensuring a memorable experience for everyone involved. Inspirational signs, meticulously created by ELA participants, lined the route, encouraging and inspiring runners and walkers alike.

At the event’s culmination, each participant was awarded a well-deserved medal, presented by the members of the Deerfield-Bannocburn Fire Department and Twin Brook volunteers. The atmosphere was filled with joy and a sense of accomplishment as the participants reveled in their achievements.

ELA and NSSRA thank the sponsors whose generous support made this event possible. Twin Brook, the presenting sponsor; Rubin Law, the medal sponsor; Parkway Bank and AJ Feldman Financial, the T-shirt sponsors; and Lake Forest Dermatology, the refreshment sponsor, played a vital role in creating a truly memorable and inclusive event.

ELA and NSSRA extend their heartfelt gratitude to the Deerfield Park District for providing the space at Maplewood Park to host the Fun Run. Their support and collaboration contributed significantly to the success of the event.

ELA and NSSRA also appreciate Lululemon, giveNkind, Twin Brook Capital Partners, and Jewel-Osco for their in-kind donations, including water, bags, and giveaways!
